HUMC is once again Nationally Recognized

We are proud to announce Hackensack University Medical Center has been named one of "America's Best Hospitals" by U.S. News & World Report® today in its 2010-2011 rankings. This year, the medical center ranks as one of the 50 best hospitals in two specialties.

Our medical center is the only hospital in New Jersey to receive two rankings in this year's publication and one of only 152 standouts nationwide to be included.

Health rankings editor Avery Comarow noted in his report, "When the stakes are high, you want the best care you can get for yourself or someone close to you. These hospitals are accustomed to seeing the sickest patients day in and day out."

Being named a 'Best Hospital' is not something that just happens. It reflects the hard work and dedication of our entire healthcare team while constantly staying focused on quality. Furthermore, the rankings underscore our philosophy that patients have always been and will always be our top priority.

The work we do here is motivated by each other which propels us forward to achieve greatness.

Best Hospitals 2010-11 includes rankings of 152 medical centers nationwide in 16 specialties. Full data is available online for another 1,740 hospitals that qualified for ranking but did not score high enough to be ranked.

The rankings in 12 of the 16 specialties were driven by hard data such as death rates, procedure volume, and balance of nurses and patients. In the four remaining specialties--ophthalmology, psychiatry, rehabilitation, and rheumatology--hospitals were ranked on reputation alone.

The hospitals also had to meet a volume requirement, individually calculated for each specialty. The required volume was the number of Medicare inpatients from 2006 to 2008 who had various specified procedures and conditions in the specialty. A hospital that fell short could still qualify if it had been nominated by at least one physician in any of the U.S. News Best Hospitals reputational surveys conducted in 2008, 2009, and 2010.

U.S. News & World Report's 2010-11 Best Hospitals is available online at www.usnews.com/besthospitals and will be featured in the August print issue of U.S.News, available on newsstands July 27.

Hackensack University Medical Center Responds to Haiti Disaster

In response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti, Hackensack University Medical Center is sending a medical delegation that will work with the mission organization NOVA Hope for Haiti. The team will be working in a tent hospital with a group from the University of Miami Medical Center called Medishare.

The team includes Myrvine Bernadotte, M.D., an emergency department physician; Jane Burke, R.N., nurse manager of the emergency department at HUMC North at PV; Maggie Lominy, R.N., an emergency room nurse; and Eamon Daul, R.N., an emergency department nurse.

Manuel Alvarez, M.D., chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is also in Haiti working with government officials and providing medical direction.

"It is difficult to see the images and hear the reports coming out of Port-au-Prince," said Robert C. Garrett, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hackensack University Medical Center. "Our hearts go out to the victims as well as their families and friends who are anxiously waiting word from their loved ones. So many of our employees have been asking 'What can we do to help?' especially since many of our colleagues have family and members who have been affected," he added.

Along with the delegation, the medical center is providing supplies and medication including central lines, IVs, syringes, orthopedic screws, sutures, gauze, and bandages.

"At Hackensack University Medical Center, we know our mission extends far beyond our campus," said Joseph Feldman, M.D., chairman of emergency medicine at the medical center who oversees the medical delegation being sent to help with the recovery efforts. "It is imperative that medical outreach is delivered in an organized and safe manner in the aftermath of this disaster so we can help as many people as possible."

Hackensack University Medical Center's Quality Ranks Among the Top Five Percent in Nation Eight Years Running

HACKENSACK, N.J. (January 26, 2010) - Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) is the only healthcare facility in New Jersey ranked among the top five percent nationally for quality eight years in a row, according to a new study issued today by HealthGrades, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization. Due to the hospital's continued high quality patient care, it has been named a HealthGrades 2010 Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence™. HUMC is the only hospital in the state to receive the award every year since its inception eight years ago. The comprehensive study analyzed 40 million hospitalization records from 5,000 hospitals over the years 2006 to 2008.

Hospitals like HUMC, that are ranked in the top 5% in the nation by the eighth annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality and Clinical Excellence study had, as a group, better patient outcomes and were improving their outcomes at a faster rate than all nonfederal other hospitals.

"As discussions in Washington continue, a transition away from the pay-for-procedure model to a quality and value based model is currently underway at hospitals throughout the nation," said Robert C. Garrett, president and chief executive officer of HUMC. "This paradigm shift is being driven by consumers, doctors, payers (including government programs and private insurers) and by hospitals themselves. The concept of value-based purchasing of healthcare is that buyers should hold providers of healthcare accountable for both the cost and quality of care. Hospitals that provide high quality healthcare, measured by patient outcomes and patient satisfaction, are being recognized as high-value facilities. Our recognition as a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence is an important component in our quality journey and these results continue to guide us in our decision-making," he said.

It has become an industry standard to evaluate and compare the quality of care at hospitals in terms of patient outcomes, the mortality and complication rates that patients experience at each hospital compared with all other hospitals.

Risk-adjusted mortality rates at Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence were 29% lower when compared to the other 95% of hospitals. Inhospital complication rates were 9% lower. In addition, these hospitals improved their mortality rates by an average of 14%, while the other 95% of hospitals improved by an average of 10%. Only 269 hospitals across the nation are 2010 Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence.

"Our data show that only a select few hospitals achieve high-quality patient outcomes not just in a few categories of care, but across the board and over time," said Rick May, MD, a vice president with HealthGrades and an author of the study. "Patients in communities with a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence should feel proud of the hospital's accomplishments, and confident that the level of care there is among the very best in the nation."

Last fall, HUMC received recognition from HealthGrades in the following clinical specialty areas:

In addition, HUMC has been one of America's 50 Best hospitals and ranked among the top one percent nationally for overall clinical excellence for the past three years (2007 - 2009) according to HealthGrades.

Methodology

This is the eighth year that HealthGrades has independently analyzed the clinical quality performance of all non-federal hospitals across the country in 26 procedures and diagnoses. In the study, the company reviewed approximately 40 million hospitalization records from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, over the years 2006, 2007 and 2008. All hospitals that participate in the Medicare program were part of the independent study. Hospitals that receive the HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence are those hospitals that rank in the top 5% when all 26 individual scores are aggregated into an overall score.

HACKENSACK UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER SELECTED AS A WINNER IN THE NEW JERSEY BUSINESS & INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION'S 2010 AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE COMPETITION

August 5, 2010

Every year, New Jersey Business & Industry (NJBIA) honors a select group of employers from among its 22,000 members for outstanding achievements in four categories. I am pleased to announce Hackensack University Medical Center was selected as a winner in the New Jersey Business & Industry Association's 2010 Awards for Excellence competition. This recognition is for our annual Prostate Testing and Awareness Week which illustrates dedicated community service. During the last eight years, we have tested 25,000 men and increased overall awareness about the importance of PSA testing and overall prostate cancer awareness.

I would like to especially congratulate Ihor Sawczuk, M.D. This huge undertaking could not have been possible without the dedication and commitment of many departments and individuals working in collaboration. I would like to express my gratitude to the following Departments and individuals: Public Relations, Nutrition and Food Management, Security, the Lab, the Mail Room, Diagnostics, The Cancer Center, Radiation Oncology, Cardiac Services, Virology, Volunteers, and the Department of Urology. To our committee members, couriers, diagnostic technicians, security officers, laboratory staff, and radiation oncology staff, your enthusiasm is unmatched. To all of those individuals who took the time to volunteer at one of our many sites - thank you as well.

In its eighth consecutive year of participating, Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) has again provided free access for thousands of men to be tested for prostate specific antigen (PSA), a protein in the blood that comes from the prostate; a higher PSA level can indicate a threat of cancer.

HUMC administered 2,466 tests during a week-long span that kicked off during the New York Road Runner's Father's Day Run for Prostate Cancer in Central Park. Testing locations were offered throughout the week in Harlem and midtown, New York, and in the New Jersey towns of Hackensack, Westwood, and Hawthorne. The tests were offered as a result of a longstanding partnership HUMC has with the New York Daily News in the fight against prostate cancer. Since the partnership began, more than 25,000 men have taken advantage of the free tests, which take only about five minutes.

This program is an example of our continued commitment to providing accessible services within our community; services which will result in improved health and lives saved.

Congratulations on this most deserved award!

REPORT: IMMIGRANTS LIVING IN N.J. HEALTHIER THAN THEIR NATIVE COUNTERPARTS

Please read the below article found in today's Star-Ledger on NJ immigrants' life expectancies. Contributing to the article was R. Knight Steel, M.D., chief emeritus, Geriatric Medicine at HUMC.

Report: Immigrants living in N.J. healthier than their native counterparts Published: Tuesday, March 01, 2011, 8:40 PM Updated: Wednesday, March 02, 2011, 7:50 AM http://connect.nj.com/user/saugenstein/index.html By Seth Augenstein/The Star-Ledger View full size

TRENTON < Chicken, beans and rice is a simple, traditional dish Catherine Rousseau Saintilien was cooking up Monday night for her family. But as the 50-year-old Elizabeth mother of three began whipping up the meal from a recipe she learned in Haiti as a girl, her American-born children complained < they wanted something quick, and something fried.

"They wanted to eat McDonald's," Saintilien said. Such a simple dinner conflict might explain some far-reaching new health statistics. Foreign-born residents living in New Jersey are generally healthier than their native-born counterparts, and they also have healthier lifestyle habits, according to a report released today by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. (Read the full report here in PDF format.)

The fifth of New Jersey residents who were not born in the U.S. have lower mortality rates for all 10 leading causes of death, including heart disease, cancer, strokes, chronic respiratory disease and diabetes, according to the new report. Within the four major race and ethnic groups < white, black, Hispanic and Asian < the death rate for the major chronic diseases remained lower in the estimated 2 million New Jerseyans who immigrated to the United States at some point in their lives.

"Despite variations in health status, outcomes and behaviors within racial/ethnic groups by nativity, overall foreign-born New Jersey residents emerge as being healthier compared to those who are U.S.-born," the report states.

But the findings, compiled from vital statistics spanning from 2004 through 2006, show varied results, with natural health advantages and disadvantages between races, and illnesses. Many of the statistics show modestly healthier results for immigrants, from cancers and Alzheimer's disease to mental health, but there are some standout categories.

For instance, U.S.-born blacks and Hispanics died from diabetes at much higher rates than their foreign-born counterparts: 59.3 to 42.0 per 100,000 people for native vs. immigrant blacks; 41.8 to 19.0 for native vs. immigrant Hispanics. Cardiovascular death rates are even more dramatic: 273.3 to 144.1 for native vs. immigrant blacks, and 184.9 to 92.7 for native vs. immigrant Hispanics.

Selective migration could play a role in the statistics, the report concludes. For instance, the foreign-born who live in New Jersey are generally healthier than those who did not move to this country, and immigrants who develop health problems may possibly return to their country for care.

Meredeth Turshen, a professor at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Public Planning and Policy at Rutgers University, said the study shows healthier people are more apt to migrate to a new country, which accounts for their better health outcomes.

"The foreign born are a younger population, generally only the healthiest immigrate, they have had fewer years of exposure to the toxic New Jersey environment, and in general they're still eating a healthier diet from their homeland," Turshen said.

Surprisingly, while New Jersey's foreign-born population is healthier than natives, fewer are covered by insurance, according to a 2009 Census estimate. Comprising 20 percent of the state's population, the foreign-born residents account for 45 percent of the uninsured.

CHANGES AFTER 10 YEARS
Healthy lifestyle factors are also highlighted in the report. People born in this country have a higher rate of smoking and binge drinking, according to the numbers. But an unhealthier lifestyle does kick in after a decade of American residency: foreign-born residents who live in the U.S. for 10 or more years start to show higher rates of smoking and binge-drinking, as well as obesity and hypertension.

R. Knight Steel, the chief emeritus of geriatric medicine at Hackensack University Medical Center, was sober in his assessment of the report's results. Immigrants tend to be the healthy people willing and able to make a massive change in their lives, he said.

But Steel said the report did make an acute observation in respect to American habits and lifestyle, especially obesity rates. "Overseas you don't see the level of obesity you see in this country," Steel said. "The importance of preventative health cannot be overstated."

The report was the centerpiece of a roundtable discussion among stakeholders and health leaders this afternoon at the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging at Rutgers. The leaders all agreed the study would be just the beginning of diagnosis of New Jersey's diversity.

"It's not just the African-American community," said Marcus Williams, a cardiologist at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood. "I need all my brothers to know (this), so we're all speaking the same language." "This report is truly a call to action," said Poonam Alaigh, the commissioner of the state health department. "This is not the endpoint < this is the beginning."

Saintilien was also at the roundtable, in her capacity as executive director of the non-profit service group Jefferson Park Ministries. For her, the awareness of health issues started at home: chicken, rice and beans was served at the dinner table, after all. The burgers and fries would have to wait.
"I put my foot down," Saintilien said.
